Session Two: Musicality: Strategies for enhancing students musicality (3 hours)

This 3 hour course is designed to enhance teachers’ ability, confidence and understanding of how to use music creatively and offer a wide variety of music, in order to encourage students’ appreciation of the link between performance, movement and music.

Aims

The aims of this activity are to:

  • Encourage an understanding of how to use music creatively to increase student’s awareness of rhythmical security and phrasing
  • Increase awareness of the link between the degree to which a student demonstrates light, shade and sensitivity during performance, and the student’s ability to respond in an appropriate manner to the phrasing dynamics, atmosphere and accents of the music
  • Equip teachers to use a wider range of music more confidently

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the activity participants will:

  • Be equipped to introduce appropriate music other than the set syllabus music
  • Have more understanding of how they can improve their students’ musicality, and use of emotion and phrasing
  • Be enabled to develop a sense of rhythm in their students and help them understand that in dance, music, movement and performance are a 3-way partnership, not independent entities.

Teachers will be asked to reflect on their current practice and to send to Carryne (via the National Director) a week prior to the course, questions and examples of exercises they find particularly difficult to teach or that their students find challenging to perform well.
