This series of practical, collaborative workshops offer teachers opportunities to share, discuss and trial strategies to refresh and enhance their teaching language, to support student engagement, learning and progression.

Over the series, consideration will be given to strategies teachers currently find helpful, together with exploration of additional suggestions regarding use of language for engaging students, fostering positive self-talk and peer interactions, expanding use of imagery and acknowledging progress. The power of language to promote a growth mindset, foster resilience, and encourage students will be discussed and variations of feedback strategies and language will be trialled. The workshops provide a supportive, collegial environment for teachers to reflect, reconsider and reinvigorate our teaching language for the benefit of our students and our teaching practice.

The four-part series of workshops includes:

  • Exploring current language (recommended to be taken first)
  • Mindset and motivational climates
  • Questioning and positive psychology
  • Imagery and focus for learning

Aims

The aims of this series of workshops are to:

  • provide a supportive environment for teachers to reflect on, reconsider and reinvigorate teaching language, for the benefit of students and teaching practice,
  • offer opportunities for teachers to share strategies and language teachers currently find helpful, and
  • consider, discuss and trial practical strategies to refresh and enhance teaching language to support and promote student engagement, learning and progression.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of these workshops, participants will have:

  • gained an increased awareness of a range of concepts affecting and influencing teaching language,
  • reflected on and discussed strategies for broadening teaching vocabulary,
  • expanded their ‘tools in the toolkit’ for facilitating student engagement and learning, and
  • enhanced knowledge of ways to inspire and encourage students and foster and acknowledge effort and progress.
