This double bill webinar covers two topics. You can choose to attend one or both.
Session One: Focus on Character Dancers: Grades 1 – 3 (3 hours)
This 3 hour practical course where participating teachers will gain an understanding of the important elements of performance for each of the Character Dances in Grades 1-3. Learning activities will focus on the development of correct technique through the progression of character vocabulary, differences in music and style for each grade, and ways of encouraging learners to develop accuracy in performing rhythmic content and musical phrasing.
Aims:
The aim of this practical course is to boost participants’ confidence in teaching the Character work in the RAD’s Grades 1-3 syllabus through enhancing their knowledge and understanding of technique, style and musicality appropriate to each level.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will be able to:
- demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the character technique/s at each level
- demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the correct style for each level
- discuss stylistic, rhythmic and historical features of the Character Dance music
Participants will have knowledge and understanding of:
- approaches to help their learners develop expressive and confident performance of the Character Dances
- the relationship between elements of technique, style, musicality and overall performance outlined above and the assessment criteria for Examinations, Class Awards, and Solo Performance Awards
Recommended preparation:
Some knowledge of the 6 Character Dances in the Grades 1-3 Syllabus either through attending a Grades 1-3 Course or from Grades 1-3 DVD and Grades 1-3 Set Exercises and Dances publication

Session Two: Musicality: Strategies for enhancing students musicality (3 hours)
This 3 hour course is designed to enhance teachers’ ability, confidence and understanding of how to use music creatively and offer a wide variety of music, in order to encourage students’ appreciation of the link between performance, movement and music.
Aims
The aims of this activity are to:
- Encourage an understanding of how to use music creatively to increase student’s awareness of rhythmical security and phrasing
- Increase awareness of the link between the degree to which a student demonstrates light, shade and sensitivity during performance, and the student’s ability to respond in an appropriate manner to the phrasing dynamics, atmosphere and accents of the music
- Equip teachers to use a wider range of music more confidently
Learning Outcomes
On completion of the activity participants will:
- Be equipped to introduce appropriate music other than the set syllabus music
- Have more understanding of how they can improve their students’ musicality, and use of emotion and phrasing
- Be enabled to develop a sense of rhythm in their students and help them understand that in dance, music, movement and performance are a 3-way partnership, not independent entities.
Recommended Preparation:
Teachers will be asked to reflect on their current practice and to send to Carryne (via the National Director) a week prior to the course, questions and examples of exercises they find particularly difficult to teach or that their students find challenging to perform well.

Fees
- All fees are inclusive of GST. The Academy reserves the right to amend fees where either tax changes take place during a calendar year or circumstances, such as the introduction of or a devaluation of a currency.
- We reserve the right to charge a surcharge for application forms received after the closing date.
- Payment for activities should be submitted separately from payment for resources.
Closing Dates
Closing dates will be published locally, but the general rule is that closing dates is two weeks prior to the date of the Seminar.
- Applicants are asked to apply early to ensure a place as each Seminar has a limited number of places.
General Terms and Conditions
- All applications and payments will be processed in order of receipt.
- Correspondence will be sent primarily via email, if the email address is incorrect the RAD cannot be held responsible for missed or misdirected email communications.
- Written confirmation of your application will not be sent until the closing date.
- Applications are non-transferable.
- All participants must be aged 16 and over.
- A Tax Invoice/Receipt will be issued and posted after the course together with the Certificate of Attendance and Transcript.
- The Academy reserves the right to alter the advertised programme and/or tutor without prior notice. The information in this and other printed or electronic brochures/notices is correct at the time of print or going online.
- If participant information is not received it is the responsibility of the individual who completed the booking to contact CPD department to arrange for the information to be reissued:
- Any CPD Value that an activity may carry is awarded in accordance with the Rules and Regulations of the RAD CPD Scheme. Any CPD Value accrued cannot be transferred between applicants.
Withdrawals, Transfers and Refunds
Participants who withdraw voluntarily will have their activity fees refunded, as follows:
- Withdrawals before the final closing date will receive a 90% refund.
- Withdrawals between the final closing date and six (6) working days prior to the activity will receive a 50% refund.
- There will be no refund for withdrawals made five (5) or fewer working days prior to the start of the activity.
- Participants who have to withdraw due to injury or illness, either before or after the closing date but before the activity starts, will receive a 90% refund, subject to the receipt of medical evidence.
Participants are strongly advised not to book travel or accommodation until receipt of final participant confirmation that the activity is taking place, usually 5 working days prior to the activity start date. The RAD will not accept liability for travel, accommodation or any other expenses incurred by participants.
Insurance
Participants are advised to consider taking out insurance against withdrawal due to injury/illness, medical treatment, or hospitalisation, or due to personal or family reasons which might prevent them completing the activity. Participants with an existing injury attend at their own risk.
Force Majeure
The RAD shall not be liable to refund fees or any other penalty should activities be cancelled due to any cause whatsoever beyond their control.
