This one-day workshop introduces experienced ballet teachers to Silver Swans®, with a focus on safe and inclusive practice for adults and strategies to maximise their experience.
Aim
The aim of this workshop is to
- Provide practical experience of effective ballet teaching strategies for a group of mixed ability older learners.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will have:
- an understanding of Silver Swans and the responsibilities and expectations of license holders,
- an awareness of a range of ballet teaching strategies and the benefits of these strategies in relation to Silver Swans,
- a greater understanding of how to safely modify and deliver ballet repertoire for older learners, and
- knowledge and understanding of appropriate progression, differentiation and integration considerations for adults of mixed ability.

Livestream practical workshop via Zoom
Includes practical exercises, breakout rooms and opportunities to share your experiences with fellow teachers around the world.

Who can attend?
RAD Registered Teachers, RAD FoE Students, experienced ballet teachers
On completion, RAD Registered Teachers will be automatically granted a Silver Swans license.
RAD FoE students may complete the workshop however the Silver Swans License will not be granted until after their Award has been ratified by the Board.
All other teachers who currently teach ballet, and who wish to be considered for a license, will be asked to indicate their interest upon registration for our workshops – see our flowchart for clarification.
Confirmation of eligibility for a license will be based on the observations of the Silver Swans tutor delivering the sessions. They will observe your demonstration of ballet teaching, as detailed in the list of competencies below.
You should demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of:
- the principles of ballet technique,
- the content and progressions of ballet vocabulary to at least Intermediate level (non-syllabus specific),
- how to create and deliver effective ballet class content,
- learning and teaching strategies for ballet teaching,
- teaching ballet effectively and safely using practical demonstration as appropriate, and
- effective communication through verbal and non-verbal skills.
Teachers that have indicated their interest, and are deemed eligible for the license, will be notified within 30 days following the workshop.

B.Sc (Nutrition)(Hons) / B.App.Sc (Exercise and Sports Science)
Christine started her dance career at a local dance school in Cardiff, U.K. at the age of 2½. At the age of 10 she joined The Welsh National Ballet School, then run by the late Joyce Marriot (Espinosa School). At the age of 16 Christine became a full-time student of The Rambert School of Ballet, Mercury Theatre, London under the guidance of Dame Marie Rambert. On completing her training Christine went on to dance professionally and then to teach for The Welsh Arts Council and Ogwr Borough Council, was voted onto The Executive Committee of The Dance Council for Wales and The Royal Academy of Dancing’s South Wales Committee, U.K. Christine was privileged to be coached by Mrs. Peggy Olden A.R.A.D. and completed both the R.A.D. Teaching Diploma and Teaching Certificate with Distinction and is a full member and Registered teacher with the R.A.D. as well as being an Examiner and Freelance Faculty Tutor for the Royal Academy of Dance.
