This 1-hour interactive webinar is designed to provide an overview of the knowledge and skills required to understand and recognise the signs and symptoms of eating disorders, including strategies and effective communication to aid in prevention and support of treatment for dance students.

Aim

The aims of this webinar are to

  • equip participants with evidence-based information on eating disorders in dancers, and
  • equip participants with the knowledge and skills to (1) create a safe dancing environment for prevention, and (2) refer to or connect with health professionals to seek help when they suspect eating disorders in their students.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this webinar, you will:

  • have a greater understanding of the types of eating disorders,
  • understand the risk factors and protective factors of eating disorders in dancers,
  • understand the cultures that impact body image and eating behaviours in dancers,
  • be able to recognise the signs and symptoms of eating disorders,
  • know the difference between RED-S, eating disorders, and dieting, and
  • be equipped with strategies to support dancers receiving eating disorders treatment.

Required resources

Recommended preparation

  • Familiarity with the Intermediate Foundation variations through the DVD and syllabus book
  • Study the vocabulary in the variations and refer to the Foundation and Progressions of Classical Ballet publication to ensure that teachers have an understanding on how the movements and steps should be executed

Fumi is the founder and principal dietitian of DDD Centre for Recovery. She is passionate about supporting individuals to nurture respectful and compassionate relationships with their food and body. Her expertise is in Dance Nutrition and Eating Disorders Treatment. Fumi is also an executive committee member of ASPAH, a fellow of Japan Association for Eating Disorders and a lecturer for dance nutrition at Academy of Music and Performing Arts.
