This 3-hour course takes an in-depth look at the examination process in general, and at the RAD marking criteria in particular. The course includes practical information about the way that an examination is run, and also gives more detail about what an examiner is looking for when they watch and mark an examination. This course will help RAD teachers to identify key areas where they can work with their students to develop their response to RAD marking criteria, and therefore improve their students’ examination results. An opportunity for Q&A will follow.
Aims:
The aims of this workshop are to:
- outline the basic format of RAD examinations,
- focus on and explain specific examination criteria,
- identify ways to improve candidates’ performance in an exam scenario, based on knowledge of the RAD examination criteria,
- provide the opportunity to become more familiar with selected levels of the RAD syllabus, and
- give RAD teachers the opportunity to engage in discussion regarding the examination process and examination criteria.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- have increased their knowledge of RAD syllabus content and examination procedures,
- have gained greater breadth of knowledge regarding the RAD examination criteria, and be able to apply this knowledge in their teaching, and
- be able to use the content of the course to help evaluate and improve their work as a teach.

Crystal is an appointed RAD Examiner, RAD CPD tutor, RAD CDT tutor. Currently base is Sydney Australia, her ballet teaching journey since 2000 brought her working alongside influential figures like Gelsey Kirkland, Ashley Killar and Jane Allyn, Hilary Kaplan, just to name a few. As a freelance teacher, she regularly shares her knowledge to studios like Ecole Ballet and Dance Theatre, Alegria Dance Studios, Conlan College, Danceworks and the McDonald College in Sydney. She also tutors at RAD intensives holiday courses to help prepare students for RAD exams in Australia. She travels around the world carry out examining and tutoring duties for RAD regularly engage with emerging teachers and experienced teaching members of the RAD.
Trained at Jean M Wong Ballet School and Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Later obtained her BA (Hons) in the Art and Teaching of Ballet at the College of the Royal Academy of Dance London Headquarters. Crystal moved to Australia in 2000 and further pursue her Graduate Diploma in Choreography at the Victorian College of the Arts. Trained and worked under Craig Phillips, she became a certified Pilates Instructor at Dance Medicine Australia (DMA) and has worked closely with dancers in Australia. Her days in Melbourne working closely with Gelsey Kirkland at Dance World 301 allowed her to gain insights to the art of fostering artistry from the great artist. She is on the RAD examiner’s panel after completing the prestige RAD examiner’s training program under the guidance of former Artistic Director of RAD Paula Hunt.
She enjoys meeting new people and is grateful to share her teaching in hope to inspire and be inspired by everyone who crosses path.
