Contact:

A 6-hour practical course, split over two mornings, in which participating teachers will gain a detailed understanding of the steps and movements of each of the Classical Variations within Grades 1-3. Learning activities relating to the development and presentation of the original choreography will be taught and the examination and assessment criteria relating to the variations will also be discussed.

Aims:

The aims of this workshop are to:

  • provide teachers with an in-depth analysis of the choreography relating to the Classical Dances of Grades 1-3 (female and male), and
  • enhance knowledge and understanding of the technique, style and musicality relating to each variation.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • demonstrate, physically and or through explanation, an understanding of the technique and movement quality in each variation,
  • demonstrate, physically and or through explanation, an understanding of the performance elements for each variation, and
  • discuss musical interpretation.

Format

In-person practical workshop – includes practical exercises and group activities in the studio with your tutor and fellow teachers.

Recommended Preparation

  • Attendance of an introductory Grades 1-3 course or a working knowledge of the content of Grades 1-3 including the variations (male and female)
  • Approaches and methodology to help their students develop expressive and confident performance
  • Knowledge and understanding of the assessment criteria for examinations (male and female)

Required resources

  • Suitable clothing to take part in the practical elements
  • Relevant props related to each of the dances

Tutor

Debra Whitten

Debra Whitten (A.R.A.D Solo Seal) is an Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance and is also an appointed Solo Seal Examiner and Standardisation Examiner. After graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts with a Diploma in Dance, Debra opened her own school the Debra Whitten School of Dance which offers classes from 2 years- vocational full-time training. As a well-respected RAD Examiner, she travels throughout Australia and overseas, which gives her a high exposure to up-to-date training methodologies, syllabi content and examiner criteria. Debra has trained numerous successful and outstanding dancers at both her own school and as a faculty member of the Queensland Dance School of Excellence for over eighteen years.
