A one-day practical course in which participating teachers will gain a detailed understanding of the steps and movements of each of the Advanced 1 (female) and Advanced 2 (female) levels. Learning activities will focus on the development of correct technique through the progression of vocabulary, differences in music and style for each variation. The course will also provide the opportunity to discuss the related examination assessment criteria and exercises for the development of correct technique.

Aim

The aim of this course is to

  • Boost participants’ confidence in teaching the variations for the Advanced 1 (female) and Advanced 2 (female) syllabi variations through enhancing their knowledge and understanding of technique, style and musicality.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the technique and movement quality in each variation,
  • demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the correct style and performance elements for each variation, and
  • discuss musical interpretation.

On completion of the workshop, you will have the knowledge and understanding of:

  • approaches to help their learners develop expressive and confident performance,
  • the relationship between elements of technique, style, musicality and overall performance outlined above, and
  • the assessment criteria for Examinations (female and male).

Format

In-person practical workshop

Includes practical exercises and group activities in the studio with your tutor and fellow teachers.

Required resources

  • Clothing suitable for the practical elements

Recommended preparation

  • familiarity with Benesh Movement Notation (BMN) and/or the word notes for the variations, and
  • study the vocabulary in the variations and refer to the Foundations of Classical Ballet publication to ensure that teachers have an understanding on how the movements and steps should be executed.

Tutor

Lindsay Ellman-Brown

Lindsay was born and raised in Zimbabwe and then moved to London in 1985 and trained at the College of the Royal Academy of Dance in London. Returning home to dance with the National Ballet of Zimbabwe, she also choreographed and produced full-length ballets for the company. Lindsay ran her own ballet school with over 250 students for 10 years in Zimbabwe before immigrating to Australia. She holds a Diploma and Licentiate from the RAD, as well as a master’s degree in Dance Teaching from QUT. Becoming an RAD Examiner in 1999, Lindsay travels extensively both nationally and internationally, examining and teaching.
