A one-day practical course in which participating teachers will gain an understanding of how to teach the Grade 4 & 5 syllabi. Learning activities will focus on creating appropriate development exercises to encourage an accurate interpretation of the criteria used in the mark scheme of the examination.

Aims

The aims of this course are to:

  • look in depth at the philosophy of the work,
  • offer a chance to improve understanding of specific areas within the syllabus, particularly in regard to technical, musical and performance aspects of the work, as identified by examiners during examinations,
  • reflect on the relevance and interpretation of the assessment criteria in selected exercises and dances,
  • provide a platform to discuss, explore and develop strategies to strengthen areas of the work,
  • support the creation of development exercises for Grades 4 & 5 students by defining the requisite skills and knowledge to do so, and
  • provide understanding of the ‘how’ of teaching the syllabus and increase knowledge of the assessment criteria.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, you will have:

  • demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the technique/s at each level, and
  • discuss the relevance and interpretation of the assessment criteria in selected exercises and dances
  • discuss the relevance and interpretation of the assessment criteria in selected exercises and dances

And will have knowledge and understanding of:

  • approaches to help their learners develop the necessary strength and understanding to achieve the requirements of the assessment criteria in the examination.

Format

In-person practical course

Includes practical exercises and group activities in the studio with your tutor and fellow teachers. When participating in the practical elements of these activities, you are participating at your own risk and should only do those activities that you consider safe for your own body. Before participating, please ensure you are in a safe space, that is free of obstacles, suitable to work in safely, that the floor surface is suitable and that you have appropriate footwear for that surface.

Midori Lotz

Registered Ballet Teacher and Examiner for The Royal Academy of Dance

Pilates, Yoga and conditioning instructor. 

Midori is a dedicated ballet and conditioning coach who is currently a Registered Teacher, CPD Tutor, CBTS mentor and a member of the Examiner’s Panel with the Royal Academy of Dance.

Midori studied at the Ransley Dance Centre, completing RAD grades to Advanced 2, before later graduating from The Australian Ballet School (ABS) with an Advanced Diploma of Dance. During her professional training at ABS, she performed with The Australian Ballet Dancers Company for two consecutive years and in extra roles with The Australian Ballet.

She then joined the Houston Ballet, where she performed in renowned ballets such as Swan Lake, La Bayadere, The Sleeping Beauty, La Fille Mal Gardee, Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon, La Sylphide, Nureyev’s Don Quixote, Coppélia, Balanchine’s Symphony in C, and Ben Stevenson’s The Nutcracker.

Midori’s further studies and continued professional development include a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, teaching certificates in Yoga, Clinical/studio Pilates, Barre fitness, Reformer and the RAD’s Professional Dancers Postgraduate Teaching Certificate.

Midori’s training and professional credits provide a wonderful base for teaching and sharing her knowledge of classical ballet. She considers the whole person in dance and maintains a positive, motivating and nurturing learning environment.
