RAD Dance School Bursaries
We are committed to breaking down barriers to dance and as such, we can offer a Dance School Bursary. This scheme is generously supported by the RAD Patrons’ Circle and offers financial support to young dancers in Wandsworth to cover the cost of RAD classes.
You will need to send your application submitted as an email attachment to danceschool@rad.org.uk to be considered for one academic year of Dance School fees for one class
We encourage applications for the upcoming academic year (2025-26) to be made by 7 August 2025.
Dance School Bursary Application Pack
Dance School Bursary selection criteria
Each bursary will be awarded based on the selection panel’s judgement. Selections will be based solely on the evidence presented in the letter. Applications can be made at any time but will be reviewed and awarded at the start of each academic year.
The total number of bursaries is subject to change annually and is dependent on available spaces in each class.
In the application letter, applicants should be able to demonstrate that their young dancer is:
- Under the age of 18 and in full time education.
- Are enthusiastic, energetic and determined to participate in dance
- Have a strong commitment to self-development
- Possess good communication and interpersonal skills
- Take a proactive and committed approach to their dancing
- Are highly motivated
- Are keen to succeed
In the application letter, applicants should explain how receiving a bursary would support their child in attending dance classes at RAD Dance School. You should disclose personal financial circumstances if you or your child represents a barrier to participation in dance classes. In addition to financial barriers, you should also disclose any cultural, physical or other needs that might preclude your child from participating in dance. We wish to open up opportunities to dance – therefore we would like to know what obstacles you face that do not allow your child to participate in dance classes.
Dance School Bursary Application process
The bursary selection process will be administered within the Dance School prior to the start of each academic year.
It is not possible to defer this bursary, although applicants are welcome to apply again in the future, regardless of previous applications.
Bursaries will only be awarded to young dancers under the age of 18.
You must submit your application in English, however, the selection panel will take into account that English may not be your first language (please make sure you tell us this in your application).
Decisions are at the discretion of the RAD Dance School and our choice of recipients is final. No feedback will be provided.
Application letters should be submitted by email to danceschool@rad.org.uk
Please save each file in the following format before submission: nameapplication.doc
e.g. if your name is John Smith, save your file as: John_Smith_application.doc
Please include ‘RAD Dance School Bursary Scheme’ in the email subject heading.
This bursary scheme is open on a rolling basis for the upcoming academic year of RAD Dance School dance classes. Applications are not carried over from previous entries. A new application must be submitted for each year of the bursary.
To be eligible for the next academic year, applicants must continue to demonstrate financial need, maintain an impeccable attendance record and demonstrate a positive attitude and commitment to their work.
We prefer to receive application letters by email, however, if you would prefer to send a paper copy of your application, please send it to the address below:

RAD Dance School Exams
The RAD Dance School is an Approved Examination Centre offering male and female students of all ages a full range of exams and assessments. These are internationally recognised and accredited by the Qualifications and Credit Framework, providing students with:
- achievable goals
- recognition from the world’s largest ballet examination board
- qualifications accredited by UK regulatory authorities, and
- the impetus to achieve their best in a fun and nurturing environment.
Students start with ‘Dance to Your Own Tune’, move up through Pre-Primary and Primary in Dance levels, and then on to eight Graded levels with a further six Vocational Graded levels. They may move from Graded to Vocational classes, or study both levels simultaneously. In addition to an exam at each level, we also offer students the chance to prepare and perform three dances for their RAD Solo Performance Award.
Candidates who have achieved a Pass or higher at Grades 6-8, Intermediate or Advanced Foundation can use their exam results toward their UCAS points tariff when applying to university and higher education in the UK. For further information, read our Information Pack or contact us at danceschool@rad.org.uk
Watching Days
These give parents and guardians the chance to see how their children have progressed in class. Watching days typically take place in the last two weeks of each term. If you have any questions about the schedule, please email danceschool.@rad.org.uk.

Frequently asked questions
Can I phone you to make an application?
No. At present we are only able to accept online. All the information you provide will be stored in accordance with our privacy notice.
Who should I list as the customer?
The customer is a parent/guardian if the student is under 18, or the student themselves if over 18. Whoever is listed as the customer will be sent all communication and invoices, so it is vital that contact details are correct.
I’ve applied and I’m on the waiting list. When will I know if I have a space in a class next term?
If you are on the waiting list for Grades 6-8, all Vocational classes, Boys’ Ballet, Discovering Repertoire and Pointe classes, we will be in touch to invite you to a trial class once a space becomes available. Trials take place throughout the first half of the term.
All other classes can be booked directly online. Booking will open before the start of each term.
When will I receive more information about my upcoming trial?
If you have received a trial invite from us, please get in touch via email to confirm your attendance so that we can send you all the information you will need before the arranged trial date.
What should the student wear for a trial class?
Students are not expected or required to wear the correct uniform for their first class, but we do ask that comfortable clothing suitable for dancing is worn, and that hair is tied up neatly.
Can parents watch trial classes?
No. Parents are not permitted to watch trial assessments.
How do I sign up for classes?
All applications and bookings are done via our website. Depending on which class you’re interested in, you can either complete an online application form to be added to our waiting list (grades 6-8, all vocational classes, pointe classes, Boys’ Ballet, and Discovering Repertoire) or book straight into your preferred class (all other classes).
I want to sign my child up for classes, but I don’t know what class or grade I should book.
If you’re not sure what class you should sign up for and want advice, please refer to our Age Guidelines and Class Descriptions on our website.
Our full range of children’s and adults’ classes are available to explore online.
The class I’d like to book isn’t showing up on the schedule.
If your preferred class is on our timetable, but doesn’t appear on the booking page, this means it is full, and we cannot take more bookings. Please check the timetable for alternative classes or try again the following term.
Can I be added to the waiting list for classes OTHER THAN grades 6-8, vocational classes, Boys’ Ballet, and Discovering Repertoire?
We don’t have a waiting list for any other classes, but if you’d like to be notified when booking opens next term, please let us know via email and we will add you to our mailing list. Bookings open on our website shortly before the start of each term. Join our mailing list to be among the first to know once it is open.
