A half-day practical course in which participating teachers will gain a detailed understanding of the steps and movements of each of the Female variations at Advanced Foundation level. Learning activities will focus on the development of correct technique through the progression of vocabulary, differences in music and style for each variation. The course will also provide the opportunity to discuss the related examination assessment criteria and exercises for the development of correct technique.

Aims

The aim of this half-day practical course is to boost participants’ confidence in teaching the variations for the Advanced Foundation (Female) syllabus variations through enhancing their knowledge and understanding of technique, style and musicality.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the technique and movement quality in each variation,
demonstrate, physically and/or through explanation, an understanding of the correct style and performance elements for each variation, and
discuss musical interpretation.

Participants will have knowledge and understanding of:

approaches to help their learners develop expressive and confident performance,
the relationship between elements of technique, style, musicality and overall performance outlined above, and
the assessment criteria for Examinations.

Recommended Preparation

Teachers should familiarise themselves with Benesh Movement Notation (BMN) and/or the word notes for the variations.

Study the vocabulary in the variations and refer to the Foundations of Classical Ballet publication to ensure that teachers have an understanding on how the movements and steps should be executed.

Ms Adeline Leong

RAD Examiner

Adeline is a dance teacher and educator with over 31 years of experience. She continues to find joy in pursuing knowledge by actively questioning and reflecting on her teaching practices to create innovative and relevant approaches for today’s learners.

In 1993, she earned the Diploma for Licentiate (LRAD) and the Advanced Executant Certificate (ARAD) while completing the Royal Academy of Dance’s (RAD) three-year teacher training programme. Adeline has since been awarded a distinction for the RAD Master of Arts in Education (Dance Teaching), a degree validated by the University of Bath. She also received the

Professor Joan White Prize in recognition of her outstanding achievement for the final research project.

Adeline’s current appointment with the RAD Panel of Examiners and her role as a tutor for their Continued Professional Development and Teacher Training Programmes further contribute to her professional portfolio and commitment to dance teaching. Her previous experiences include running her own dance school from 1996 to 2018 and teaching dance as an elective subject to middle and high school students at a North American international school in Kuala Lumpur for 12 years.
